We are committed to reducing the environmental, economic, social and ethical impact of our procurement activities.
Sustainability – To make a paper sack, you need to cut down trees but, if managed responsibly, this can be done sustainably. All sack kraft paper is purchased from Paper Mills that source their raw materials from well managed (financially, environmentally and socially) and sustainable forests.
Sack Kraft paper used by East Riding Sacks comes from sustainable forests where growth is larger than harvesting.
Recyclability – Almost all the paper we use is suitable for recycling, recycling paper helps to conserve natural resources and saves energy. By recycling our products energy and natural resources needed to turn a raw material into a new product are saved which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and has less environmental impact (i).
Organic materials decompose much quicker than plastics – ‘It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Unfortunately, the bags don’t break down completely but instead photo-degrade, becoming microplastics that absorb toxins and continue to pollute the environment’(ii) Every year at least 8 million tons of plastic end up in our oceans resulting in disturbing impacts on marine environments.
East Riding Sacks can work with companies to either reduce or eliminate plastic usage from their packaging. Pure sack kraft paper will typically decompose in a fraction of the time plastic does and will not have any lasting impact on the environment.
